A Day in the Life of a Kids DJ: Behind the Scenes at a Children’s Disco Party
As a Kids DJ, my job is all about creating joy, energy, and unforgettable memories. But what many people don’t see is the amount of preparation and thought that goes into making each children’s disco party a success. Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes of a typical day in my life, from the early morning prep to the final moments when the last song fades and the kids head home with big smiles.
7am – Early Morning Prep
My day starts bright and early, long before the music starts pumping. I like to begin the day by reviewing the details of the upcoming party: the venue, the age group, any special requests from the parents, and of course, the playlist. I’ve already been in contact with the client to get a sense of what their child loves—whether it’s a favourite song, a specific theme, or even a particular game they’re excited about. This helps me tailor the experience to make it truly special.
After a quick breakfast, it’s time to load the car with all the necessary equipment. This includes my DJ deck, speakers, microphone, lights, and any props or prizes for the games. I always double-check to make sure everything is in working order—there’s no room for technical glitches when you’re responsible for making a child’s big day perfect.
10am – Arrival and Setup
I aim to arrive at the venue at least an hour before the party is set to begin. This gives me ample time to set up, test the sound system, and make any last-minute adjustments based on the room’s acoustics or layout. Every venue is different, so I need to adapt to the space, whether it’s a large hall, a cozy community centre, or even a family’s living room.
While setting up, I’ll often meet with the parents or party planners to go over the schedule. Communication is key—I want to ensure that everyone is on the same page about the flow of the party, especially if there are specific moments like cake cutting, singing Happy Birthday or a special dance that need to be timed perfectly.
11am – Showtime!
As the first guests arrive, I start playing some background music to set the mood. Once the majority of the kids are there, it’s time to kick things into high gear. The first few minutes are crucial—I need to capture the children’s attention right away, so I usually start with a high-energy song that everyone knows and loves.
Throughout the party, I’m not just the DJ—I’m also the MC, the game host, and sometimes even the dance instructor. I’ll lead the kids through a variety of activities, from classic party dances like the “Cha-Cha Slide” to interactive games that get everyone involved. My goal is to keep the energy up and make sure every child feels included, even those who might be a bit shy or overwhelmed.
One of the highlights of the party is always the snow machine finale. The kids absolutely love it, and it’s a great way to bring the event to a magical close.
1230pm – The Wind Down
As the party draws to a close, I’ll transition to some calmer music while the kids sit down for food or cake. This is also the time when I discreetly start packing away some of my equipment, making sure everything is done quietly so as not to disrupt the remaining festivities.
Before I leave, I always make a point to thank the parents and check in with them to ensure they were happy with how the event went. It’s important to me that they feel satisfied with the experience, as word-of-mouth and repeat business are a big part of what keeps me going.
1pm – Pack Up and Reflect
Once the party is officially over and the last piece of equipment is loaded back into the car, I take a moment to reflect on the day. What went well? Were there any challenges? How did the kids respond to the music and games? This reflection helps me continuously improve and adapt my services to meet the ever-changing needs and preferences of my young audience.
Afterward, it’s time to head home, unload, and start preparing for the next event. Being a Kids DJ is a lot of work, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Seeing the joy on the children’s faces and knowing that I’ve played a part in making their day special is what makes all the effort worthwhile.
Conclusion
Being a Kids DJ is more than just playing music—it’s about creating an experience that kids will remember for years to come. From the careful preparation to the energetic performance and thoughtful wrap-up, every aspect of my day is dedicated to making each party as magical and fun as possible. And at the end of the day, when the lights go down and the room is quiet again, I know I’ve done my job well if the kids leave with smiles on their faces and stories to tell.
